Geek Dreams: Best Ideas for a Silicon Valley Vacation

A vacation to Silicon Valley can be a dream come true for Geeks of all ages. While a journey to the birthplace of technology may not be on quite the same level as a religious pilgrimage to Jerusalem or Mecca, it is a significant event that a Geek will never forget.

A sea captain may want to travel and see all of the historic lighthouses along the Eastern Seaboard. Kids would consider a trip to Disneyland to be a dream vacation and other people would be thrilled to spend a week on a tropical island in the Caribbean. While Geeks may like to go to amusement parks and lay out on the beach like their less tech-savvy friends, what they really would love the best is a trip to Silicon Valley.

Not all of today's innovative technology takes place in California's Silicon Valley, but it is the home of technology giants like Apple, Google and Hewlett-Packard. Silicon Valley is filled with venture capitalists looking to fund the next Google or Facebook. Silicon Valley will always be the heart of the industry.

If you want to get a first-hand look at the earliest stages of the digital age on through the latest developments in our digital world, there is no better place to take a vacation than the Silicon Valley. So pack your bags and come out to see where technology began, where it is today, and where technology may go in the future.

Computer History Museum

Upholding the honorary title of Geek makes it almost mandatory that part of your tour of Silicon Valley includes a visit to the Computer History Museum. Home to the largest collection of computer-related artifacts in the world, it is quite amazing to journey through time and see how far technology has come from the early days. Even though you may not have been born back in 1956, you will appreciate the contribution that IBM made to data storage technology by replacing the punched cards with the first disk drives.

Your time in the museum will be like taking a walk through time. As you make your way from exhibit to exhibit, you will have to see the step-by-step advances in technology in what is a relatively short period of time. From the first microchip to the introduction of Atari's Pong game you will move forward in time to see the introduction of the Apple computer and the IBM personal computer.

Moving forward, your tour will feature the brand new Internet and let you see how computers have continually changed to keep up with the times. Explore everything and when you are done, stop by the gift shop and pick up a souvenir for yourself and maybe a gift for one of your geeky friends.

HP Garage

Close to the Palo Alto campus of Stanford University, in a small, quiet neighborhood, stands a structure of great historical significance. Back in 1938, Stanford classmates, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard rented out the 12x18-foot modest space and started a business. The detached garage served as a research lab, workshop and manufacturing facility for some of the first Hewlett-Packard products.

In 1989, the garage was officially dedicated as the Birthplace of Silicon Valley. In 2007 it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. HP purchased and restored the Garage and adjacent home to its original 1938 appearance. Geeks and plain old curiosity seekers are welcome to get a view of this historic site from the sidewalk but are not permitted on the private property. You are welcome to come by and snap a few pictures, but please respect the privacy of the neighbors.

Original Apple Store

Take out your smartphone and use your GPS to find the shortest route to Apple's corporate headquarters in Cupertino. The company store is open to the public, but is not like the local Apple store you might have visited in your home town. They do not sell iPhones or computers at this store, but it is the only place you can buy an authentic Apple logo t-shirt, cap or other accessories.

Google Garage

Garages must hold a special place in the hearts of all those people who aspire to become the next famous Geek in Silicon Valley. Today there are probably hundreds of tech-savvy teens working in their garages to come up with the next great product that will change the landscape in the Silicon Valley. If you were interested in the HP Garage, you will also be interested in seeing the Google Garage. It was 1998 when Stanford grad students Larry Page and Sergey Brin came up with the world's most popular search engine and housed their start-up business in the home of Susan Wojcicki's Menlo Park garage. If you are a Geek, come and gawk at the original company home of the Internet's most influential company.

Weirdstuff Warehouse

If you need anything computer or tech-related you will probably find it in this 10,000 square foot store. You can find almost anything from cables, printers and software to artistic mouse pads and old parts for your vintage computer.

Google's Android Statues

Standing proudly outside of Building 44 at Google's corporate headquarters is a collection of iconic figures. Each plastic Android statue has a code name based on a new version of the popular mobile operating system. The newest Android - KitKat, who joins Cupcake, Gingerbread Man and the others.

Intel Museum

Although this is a small museum, it contains the complete story of Intel and its history of making the brain of the personal computer. Plan on spending a couple of hours and bring the kids along because they will love the many interactive exhibits. This is a fun and educational experience that should not be missed and admission is free!

Annual Shareholder Meeting

If you have a 401-K plan or invest in the stock market, you probably own some of these high-tech companies. If you own a share of Apple, Google or Facebook, and are in town at the right time of the year, you can attend the annual shareholder meeting. What a treat it would be for any Geek to see Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) or Tim Cook (Apple) and maybe even ask them a question.

Silicon Valley is great for Geeks of all ages. While it is a real place with real hard-working people, you will feel like you are in an enchanted land. Visit the tech sites, stop by Stanford University, have lunch at a fabulous restaurant and take a little time to let the magnificence of this area take your breathe away.

Top 4 Reasons Why People Who Want to Travel Don't

I am going to tap back into my pre-traveling mind and sit down with anyone longing for distant places, who hasn't yet taken that first empowering step out of their country. You are one of many in this category-a very small percentage of Americans, for example, have ever traveled to Europe. Why is this, when so many plan to wander through the wine vineyards of Italy, climb the Eiffel Tower or stroll about the land of their ancestors in Ireland, England, Germany and so on? We always say, "Someday, I'll go there." Unfortunately, this isn't a thing you should put off for long, lest it never come to fruition. Don't listen to the words that hold you back in your own mind...

1. "When my bills are in order, I'll go."

Here's a horrifying thought-what if your bills are never in order? Right now, you could be a college student, making it by on part time jobs and loans from Mom and Dad. You could be a fresh graduate, just entering the first years of a real career. Maybe you're a new parent, and we all know babies aren't cheap. Have teenagers who want the newest gadget or clothes?-not a good time to blow money on a trip! Kids going into college?-forget about it. My point is, you'll always have big events along the road of your life, and if you don't force a detour now and then, you'll never stop to see what else is out there.

2. "It might be dangerous there."

Yes, this is a favorite for your friends and family to whisper or shout to you. Central America has a vicious drug cartel, the sex slave trade will get you in Europe, and you'll most certainly catch a bug in Asia. It makes me wonder what the warnings are for "foreigners" to come to the States! I'm going to be very honest with you right now, if fear for your safety is the cause for a sedentary life-I've been to both borders of Costa Rica and between, I've explored Europe from Norway to the South of France, and the West and East coasts of Australia (the land of the world's deadliest animals). My brother has studied in India and Thailand and can't wait to get back. We have never felt as in danger outside of the US than in our own city of Baltimore. Sure, a disease-carrying bug might bite me here in Costa Rica, but IF that were to happen, there's very affordable health care in town, and the doctors here assure me I would not lose a leg. I could have been robbed in Nicaragua, but they would have left me unharmed and just one iPhone less.

3. "I will go when the kids are older."

My kids are three and one. We've taken our first to Norway for a summer, and the both of them to Costa Rica for most of 2013. Let me think of what we'd be doing in Maryland right now, had we decided to listen to this travel-squasher... I'd be bundling my kids up to walk around in their own house, and potentially to the nearby playground (if I'm feeling adventurous), maybe go to the grocery store for some flare, wait for my husband to finish up his work around eight o'clock, cook and clean up dinner and sit down to absorb some crap on the TV. Lovely. Would this really be better, safer, healthier for my kids? They might prefer digging on the beach any sunny month of the year, learning about sea turtles, or discovering monkeys and parrots when Mommy points them out in the trees. They might like hearing a new language spoken to them every day by real people than on computer programs. I have a hunch your kids will benefit from traveling, so listen to your wild side and give them a childhood their peers will drool over in the future.

4. "I'll travel when I retire."

Will you, though? With the precarious state of Social Security and rising dependence on prescription drugs, will you be financially comfortable, fit and willing to travel later in life? If you do have a cozy nest egg built up by then, you might have adorable grandchildren, and what's harder to leave than that? You also might be too tired to hike Machu Picchu, or swim with dolphins-forget about surfing. Do you really want to spend your golden years exploring, when all you might want to do is rest? I suppose there's no way to know for sure. But what you can know for sure is how you're feeling now. Don't wait until your desire, hope or thrill for adventure dissipates. Live the life of your dreams while you still have the energy to keep up with it. When your last years arrive, do you think you'll regret traveling when you were younger? Or, will you be happy you waited?

Listen to your gut, and book that first glorious ticket out of the mundane. If money is a question, forgo that extra junk food, pack of cigarettes, night of drinking and debauchery (or if you are a particularly upstanding person, which I'm sure you are, you could resist any new unnecessary items) and tuck the savings into a traveling fund-only touchable for plane tickets, passports, or bungalow bookings. Make it happen for yourself, because you deserve to see the place of your daydreams. If you can do it only once, you'll break from rut of these thoughts that keep you stuck in somedays, which might end up to become nevers.

The World's Most Entertaining Airports

It's hard to believe the words "entertaining" and "airport" can co-exist in the same sentence. When I'm thinking about an entertaining place to kick-back and have some fun, an airport generally doesn't come to mind. I think of hours of boredom, stale sandwiches, cramped seating and dodgy wi-fi that hasn't been updated since the 90's.

Luckily, an increasing number of airports are making an effort to liven up the pre-flight experience by providing a variety of wonderful, sometimes weird, distractions to keep travelers entertained.

The following are five of the world's airports where entertainment and leisure are taking off:

5. Munich, Germany

Munich is famed for its Oktoberfest festival, and the airport brings a sample of this fun to thirsty travelers. A Bavarian-style tavern complete with its own brewery, live music and a traditional beer garden, serves over 110,000 gallons of homemade beer from its home in the airport terminal.

4. Sydney, Australia

Potted plants are a common adornment in many airport areas, but the Qantas First Lounge at Sydney International Airport is home to a 30-meter vertical garden, containing 8,400 plants. Business travelers can also hit the books in the airport's business center and library.

3. Seoul-Incheon

Along with several awards for the world's best airport in air service quality, Seoul-Incheon also offers a wide selection of fun activities and facilities. An ice rink, casino, spa and movie theatre are just a few of the cool distractions offered. Travelers can also take a 5-minute shuttle to tee off for a relaxing round on the airport's 18-hole Incheon Club Golf course.

2. Nashville

Nashville, Tennessee: Known throughout the world as Music City. Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash have all been fixtures of the city's famed recording studios. Playing on its lively musical scene, Nashville Airport puts on regular live concerts for travelers. Four stages within the airport host upwards of 100 free events every year.

1. Singapore

Singapore's Changi Airport has been crowned the best in the world for the fourth time in 14 years at the prestigious World Airport Awards in Geneva. Realizing that travel can be stressful, the airport was designed to be an open, airy space with lots of greenery, outdoor access and comfortable seating.

The airport's incredible amenities include a butterfly garden, rooftop pool, movie theatres, spas, onsite nature trail, interactive art gallery and a four-story slide for children! Free city tours are available to any passenger with a layover of five hours or more.

Six Things You Shouldn't Miss in Rome

  1. Learn a bit of Italian language. After arriving in Rome, you should learn at least some Italian words and sentences. Italian young speak English quite well, but if you learn something Italian they will be proud and become your friends. Would you like to know how to learn Italian? The best thing you can do is buy a small dictionary to study the most common words. After that, you can attend an intensive or super-intensive class to learn the language.

  2. Take a walk in Trastevere. Trastevere is one of the most authentic areas of Rome, because it has a long and rich history thanks to the different populations who have lived there, such as Romans, Greeks, and Jews. In fact, it is the most cosmopolitan district of the Capital. Today, "Trasteverini", the inhabitants of Trastevere, are considered the "authentic Romans", known for their dialectic use of Italian, their easy approach to life and a long tradition of local food.

  3. Seeing the Pope. If you are Catholic or not is the same thing. If you visit Rome, joining an audience with the Pope on Wednesday morning is a wonderful experience anyway. If the weather is fine, he'll have his general audience in St Peter's Square, otherwise it will take place in the Sala Nervi audience hall. If you go there, don't forget to take a camera with you and after the audience, you can always visit Vatican Museum (you have to book in advance and to save time you can do it on Vatican Museum Website). In this way, you will have the opportunity to admire Sistine Chapel frescoes and one of the most wonderful monuments in the world.

  4. Take a tour in Villa Borghese. Villa Borghese is a true green paradise in the heart of Rome. It is a popular destination for families with children or dogs, runners, skaters and bikers, but also old people who can easily take a walk in the calm of the nature. The park was originally created to be a private vineyard, it was redesigned and enlarged for pope Paul V's nephew in 1605, and today it is a real point of reference for Roman citizens, especially in the afternoon and during the weekend. People go there to have a picnic, celebrate anniversaries or to organize open air parties. According to a recent international poll, Villa Borghese is the most beautiful park in Europe and one of the best in the world. Despite the chaos of the city, it is still a green and pleasant space to have fun and relax. We suggest that you have a walk in the park or take a tour by bike (that you can rent directly there).

  5. Visit folkloristic markets. Rome is very famous for its large and ancient markets. One of the most famous is in Via dei Coronari, where you can find shops and workshops selling ancient furniture and objects. There is also Campo de Fiori market (not far from Piazza Navona and near Palazzo Farnese, that is France embassy headquarter) where you can find a large choice of vegetables, fruits and spices. After that, you can take a look at Porta Portese market, where you can find everything: CDs, clothes, furniture, bags and accessories and many other useful (or trivial) things. If you go there, pay attention to pickpockets!

  6. Take a walk in Castelli Romani. About twenty kilometers far away from Rome, there is one of the most beautiful areas of Lazio region: Castelli Romani, a collection of small villages in the south of the Capital. Here you can find ancient Pope residences and fascinating ancient towns. Castelli Romani is a very typical area where you can breathe a special and rustic atmosphere. We suggest that you go and visit at least the most important towns (Frascati, Castel Gandolfo, Ariccia and Marino). Castelli Romani is the most appreciated place to buy a second home (especially for Roman citizens) and the perfect place to spend the weekend.

Christmas: Traditions With Which It Is Celebrated Around the World

Christmas is a world of best wishes. Nowadays, traveling for Christmas isn't just about visiting Grandma. The convenience of Internet shopping makes it easier to get discounts and book tickets that offer savings. So you can travel to a country looking for a White Christmas, curious about fascinating Christmas traditions and taking delight in exploring cultures.

1. Christmas In Russia

In Russia Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January. This is so, because the church uses the old Julian calendar for religious celebrations. Russians fast for about forty days until January 6th (Christmas Eve). During the traditional Christmas Eve, people say special prayers. Then commences a twelve-course supper, each meal is dedicated to one of the twelve apostles.

2. Christmas in Spain

A Christmas tradition in parts of Spain, Portugal and Italy is to set up a model exhibition of Bethlehem. Together with the Virgin Mother, Joseph and little baby Jesus, they place a Caganer in the scene. The Caganer (known also The Crapper, or The Shitter) is a little figure of a peasant wearing a Catalan red cap, in the act of defecating. This is explained with tradition and sense of humor. It is especially amusing for children. The Caganer is fertilizing the Earth. The idea is, that God will manifest himself when he is ready, without regard for whether we, human beings are not.

3. Christmas in Czech Republic

Women in the Czech Republic perform a strange ritual on Christmas Day to predict whether they will marry next year. With back turned to the house door they throw one shoe over their shoulder. If it lands with the heel towards the door, she will stay single, but if the fallen shoe points towards the door, it means she should start preparing for a celebration, other than Christmas.

4. Christmas in Norway

The people of Netherlands, who celebrate the holiday on December expect SinterKlaas and his companion Black Pete, who come down by the way of the steamer and leaves candy and nuts for good little boys and girls. The kids have filled their shoes with hay and sugar for the horse.

5. Christmas in Germany

In Germany Nikolaustag is December, 6th. On that eve children leave a shoe outside the door and the next morning candies appear in them for the good little boys and girls. But if they haven't been good a golden birch is put next to the sweets, as a symbol of spanking.

6. Christmas in Japan

Many Japanese people on Christmas Eve dine traditionally on KFC, It is so popular and famous, that if you want to eat at a KFC on Christmas, you will have to make a reservation.

7. Christmas in Slovakia

At the beginning of Christmas Eve the head of the family takes a spoon of Loksa (a traditional Christmas dish made out of bread, poppy seed, filling and water) and throws it up at the ceiling. The more of it remains glued on the ceiling, the richer the crops next year.

8. Christmas in Venezuela

In Venezuela at Christmas Eve morning the roads of the city are closed to cars so that people can roller skate to Mass.

9. Christmas in Bulgaria

Here is the place where everybody travels to Grandma's house. The whole family gathers together, and they spend a day of cooking nine meals. When evening comes, the oldest family member burns some frankincense to drive evil spirits away from the house, then the family holds their hands and say the Lord's Prayer together. Carol-singers would drop in around that time.

The flight information can be found on the website of the flight providers, and almost everywhere online. Many companies offer a discount, because the demand by the travellers is very high. If you are stranded on a distant airport and your flight is cancelled or delayed overnight, your airline is responsible for providing meals and hotel accommodations. Sometimes things can go wrong with flight arrangements. However, Christmas is about sticking to those you love, which makes for the true holiday experience.

Florida's National Parks

Florida is known for its sunshine, beaches and theme parks, but the Sunshine State also boasts some of the most beautiful and expansive national parks in the U.S. There are three parks in Florida and each has its own unique landscape and wildlife that its visitors can explore.

Biscayne National Park

Just south of Miami, Biscayne works to protect the area's barrier reefs and Biscayne Bay. Located on Florida's southern coast, Biscayne is also home to some of the best scuba diving and snorkelling spots in the whole of America where the park is made up of 95 per cent water. Covering an extensive 172,971 acres, the park includes one of the Florida Keys islands, Elliot Key, which is made up of fossilised coral reef.
The park welcomes nearly 500,000 people a year who enjoy the park's many natural outdoor pursuits that include water sports like kayaking, windsurfing, fishing and more.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Situated in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dry Tortugas is known for its wildlife and historic shipwrecks. The park's most iconic feature is that of its coastal fortress - Fort Jefferson. This huge structure remains unfinished to this day, despite construction beginning in 1846 under the supervision and planning of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Made up of over 16 million individual bricks, the fort was once used as a prison after the Civil War to detain a number of 'Lincoln Conspirators', among other prisoners.
While the park is only accessible via boat or seaplane, it still receives, on average, 60,000 visitors annually, as it is popular for family holidays involving camping, fishing and snorkelling in the park's warm waters.

Everglades National Park

The only national park in Florida to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Everglades park is the third largest in the south USA, after Yellowstone and Death Valley, covering over a million and a half acres. The park is also recognised as an International Biosphere Reserve and a Wetland of International Importance due to its wildlife and natural environment.

Home to 36 threatened and protected species, including the Florida panther, the American crocodile and the West Indian manatee, the Everglades is a subject of much heated debate in Florida, as its delicate ecosystem is constantly under threat from human activity. The park protects around 20 per cent of the southern everglades and is a fantastic example of Floridian nature and wildlife.

A Beach Vacation - Healthy Benefits For The Overly-Stressed

Are you feeling overly stressed? Have you ever wondered if a beach vacation would be beneficial to your health? If so, you are right! There are numerous advantages to visiting a beach to relieve stress and enjoy your life more.

In recent years, there have been some sceptics who warn people about the dangers of the beach and the exposure to the sun. But, if enjoyed in moderation with the proper safety precautions, both can be extremely beneficial to one's health.
Although a person can ingest vitamin D through supplements, there's nothing like soaking up a few of the sun's rays. Plan to sit and soak up the sun for only about 15 full minutes to get the most benefits. This amount of time will help prevent dehydration, sunburn, and skin cancer.

Vitamin D is a surefire way to reduce depression. If you absolutely have to be out in the full sun for part of the day, be sure to wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, reapply sunscreen throughout the day, wear a hat, or use an umbrella.
Swimming is an excellent source of exercise and does wonders for the mind as well as the body. You don't have to be a swimming pro while on your beach vacation to receive benefits. It's a fun activity as well as simple and easy exercise. If you are physically challenged in any way, this enjoyable past time can help relieve muscle fatigue and pain without putting strain on your body.

A beach vacation will also allow you to walk in the sand. This activity helps to strengthen muscles. It's a true workout. Kick off those shoes and let the cool sand squish between your toes as you take and walk and get some enjoyable exercise.

Another advantage is the health benefit of relaxation. People need to get away from their regular routines and relax periodically. It's good for them physically, mentally, and emotionally. If you're stressed, it's a sure sign you need to relax more. Imaging reading a book under an umbrella with a slight breeze blowing, or floating lazily on a raft in the pool.

How about building a sand castle for a health benefit? People were born with a need to create, and sand castles are a great and easy activity for the entire family to enjoy. It teaches children things like problem solving and hand-to-eye coordination. There are many life lessons parents can teach their children through building a sand castle.

Studies show sea water is also beneficial. It can increase circulation, relax the body and re-energize body cells.

Family activities are another way to enjoy a beach vacation. The 'family who plays together, stays together,' is still in vogue. Parents who have the privilege of spending plenty of relaxation time with their children instill within them a feeling of security. A bond is formed, and it's good for the mental health and wellbeing of every family member. Why not enjoy a beach vacation soon?

For the Most Exclusive Caribbean Hotels : St Lucia

For the best Caribbean hotels, St Lucia offers travelers an amazing selection unlike any other island nation in the region. Visitors can choose between budget lodgings in the capital and near the airport, to pensions in the small fishing towns of the east coast. And, of course, to many people, the name St Lucia is synonymous with the exclusive resorts that lie in the shadow of the Twin Piton mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Castries, the capital and commercial center of the island, offers the widest range of Caribbean hotels - lodgings that represent the warmth and friendliness of the local culture, while being perfectly adapted to the warm, humid climate of the Caribbean. Hotels in Castries are representative of colonial architecture dating back to the Napoleonic Wars, and are an interesting blend of French and British influences. There is a lot of choice in Castries, due to the frequent cruise ship businesses, as well as businesspeople traveling to the city.
Vieux Fort, on the southern tip of the island, also offers an interesting range of Caribbean-style hotels. Because of its status as the site of the St Lucia international airport, Vieux Fort features budget and business hotels, although Caribbean hotels are well-represented closer to the water and Saint Vincent Passage. The town is a useful base camp for exploring the island, and for that reason few of the hotels include luxuries or amenities.

The wild east coast of St Lucia offers unique and engaging Caribbean hotels. Towns like Micoud have based their livelihood on fishing, and, more recently, eco-tourism. These towns are a little off the beaten track, but their hotels provide an authentic Caribbean atmosphere. While there are a few secluded luxury resorts here, it's also possible to choose from pensions that offer the chance to live the way locals do. Micoud is a great place to plan an expedition to the rainforests and waterfalls hidden in the middle of the island, or even a deep-sea fishing expedition.

Sourfriere in the southwest corner of St Lucia, however, is the place many people associate with a romantic Caribbean luxury vacation. Sheltered beneath the iconic (and recently volcanic) Twin Piton Peaks, Soufriere is a sharp contrast between the rich, emerald green of the steeply forested mountainsides and the cobalt waters of the Caribbean below. It's said movie stars and celebrities choose this town to vacation in, and it's easy to see why. The luxury hotels and resorts here are often perched at the top of densely forested mountain ridges, away from all prying eyes. If you are looking for sheer opulence in a tropical environment of refined taste, Soufriere may be the place for you.

So, when choosing Caribbean hotels St Lucia offers plenty of variety. And no matter where you stay, you will be captivated by the beauty of the "Saint Helen of the West Indies."
